130 associations and NGOs launched a giant online petition yesterday.
The petition titled “For an era without cages” aims to reach the threshold ofa million signatures throughout Europe for the European Commission to decide on this subject.
These are today in Europe 370 millions of animals that are raised in cages whose 90 million for France according to the CIWF.
While as consumers we can already easily buy eggs from free-range hens thanks to the codes present on the eggs, on the other hand, it is much more difficult to make this choice for rabbits or pigs where there is a lack of information on the labeling of marketed products.
This lack of precision is not surprising when we know the statistics :
- 99 % of rabbits are raised in cages
- 95 % of pigs are raised on slatted floors enclosed in buildings
- 83 % of broilers are raised without access to the outdoors
- 69 % of laying hens are raised in cages
Reminder, intensive breeding is incompatible with animal welfare. Whether by the concentration of animals in enclosed places, the absence of arrangements required for the animal to reproduce natural behavior, mutilations to “adapt” the animal to confinement, overpopulation and consumer taste (jumbled up some examples : castration, beak trimming, tail cutting, clipping pigs’ teeth…).
Cage farming is considered the cruelest method of raising animals. Its abolition would already be a clear step forward in terms of animal welfare..
This petition is going in the right direction and has one million signatures, will force the European Union to rule on this practice.
We therefore invite you to sign and share this petition as much as possible !
