In Mexico, Coca-Cola has acquired considerable power. In the south of the country, in Chiapas, one of the poorest states, the American multinational has taken over the water and the lives of its inhabitants. Chiapas is considered the water reservoir of Mexico.
In the years 80, Coca Cola sets up its largest factory in San Cristobal de Las Casas, who employs nearly 300 people. It pumps the water necessary for its production, drawing directly from the city's water table to dry up some surrounding communities. To make 1 liter of Coke, it should not be less than 6 liters of water. And the profits of this industry do not seem to encourage the authorities to face the problems of its dilapidated water network.
Joined NAFTA in 1994, Mexico followed in the footsteps of the United States in its neoliberal policy. The American multinational has thus entered everywhere. Not a village that is not labeled with the brand's red and white colors. Mexicans have become the world's biggest consumers of soda, especially Coca-Cola. During Mayan ceremonies and rituals, soft drink now replaces old fermented drinks.
